PROFESSIONAL MENTORSHIP
Our extensive teaching program of "Teaching the Teachers" involves one-on-one intensive mentorship in all aspects of veterinary medicine. We start from a building a strong foundation of a good systematic physical exam, understanding physiology, and pathophysiology..... with time and effort over the days, weeks, months, years our young veterinarians develop into independent and valuable assets to their community. Here we have one of our Board Members, Dr. Raul Casas, instructing two young Nicaraguan Veterinarians on the proper pre-surgical physical exam. |
EQUIPPING OUR VETERINARIANS
Every successful businessman knows the importance of having the right tools for the job. It's no different for veterinarians. Our Veterinary equipment is vital in these remote areas and the Human Doctors often access them for their patients as well. Having the tools to form more accurate diagnoses improves the lives of our patients, helps develop our veterinarians, and strengthens our community. This is one of the most expensive part of our operation. We accept monies or used equipment..and our donors receive a tax-deduction! |
Work horses are often skinny with protruding backbones on which heavy loads are placed. This results in painful sores which never heal due to constant pressure. We surgically and medically treat these wounds along with client education of how to proper fit a saddle/equipment.
|
FIELD CLINICS
Our two week field courses will sometimes treat over 900 work horses with vaccinations, castrations, dental work, wound management, and everything in-between. |
A proper castration under anesthesia (as opposed to roped-down and cut) is not only a more humane means of castrating but also demonstrates the increased productivity of their work-horse with less bleeding, less mortality, and shorter time (2 weeks vs 6 months) back to work.

PREVENTATIVE HEALTH
Poor nutrition and the physiologic stress of constant pregnancies leads to significant animal suffering. Parasites and viruses lead to epidemic outbreaks with high morbidity/mortality In addition to proper Spay/neutering/Vaccinations/parasite control, improved nutrition for the human families lead to improved nutrition for their animals--dogs, horses, pigs, goats, chickens--all benefit from better human nutrition as they often are able to get some of the "left-overs" as well as more sustainable agriculture practices for food security. |
DENTAL CARE
The workhorse will be need to work regardless of their condition. Making sure their teeth are the best that they can be to extract any extra bit of nutrition is vital. Here Dr. Dave Turoff is teaching how to perform proper equine dentistry to Guatemalan Veterinary students. Horses also are de-wormed, vaccinated and wounds treated. |
EDUCATION OF OUR COMMUNITY ANIMAL OWNERS
One of the most important and effective aspect of our project is the education of the animal owners. They travel far for proper treatment and clearly value their animals. Helping them understand their animals health and husbandry needs empowers them to take active daily measures to improved health and productivity. |
