Local Vocational Development
Many impoverished families in rural areas are landless with significant food insecurity and have vulnerable or non-existent livelihoods. This often leads young adults to leave their communities and families to emigrate to other countries in search of jobs. The lack of local services in turn results in more hardships for daily living. Teaching young adults vocational skills within a community increases potential to alternative incomes while adding much needed local services which have economic value as well as community value. SVI selects certain committed and community minded individuals within our networked areas for vocational training which benefits animals as well as community. By choosing individuals from the community, the individual is likely to stay and live in the community and become an valuable community asset.
NURSING
SVI sponsors scholarships and travel expenses for these 3 young women from the rural community of San Pedro, Ometepe. These young women attend nursing school on the weekends and work at home caring for family during the week. Upon graduation, SVI provides Blood Pressure Cuffs, stethoscopes, glucometers, and inhalers to each of the nurses so they can develop their own small businesses providing much needed health services to their community. |
FARRIER
Horses make up a large part of the agricultural work force in most of the world. Healthy non-painful feet increase their economic value to the family farm and decrease their suffering. SVI sponsored Carlos Cabrera from Ometepe Island, Nicaragua in developing into a well-trained independent farrier. Carlos showed promise with his commitment to horses and doing local trimming of horse feet....all self taught. Carlos Graduated from World Horse Welfare certification course as well as SVI sponsored a two month advanced farrier course in Spain. The extra training was a game-changer for his vocation. He is now providing high level service to the many horses of Nicaragua....and earning an independent living! |
CARPENTRY
Nolan works on-site as a carpenter....some days are so hot, he builds a little hut first to work under as shown in the photo below. Nolan had been working with minimal tools and does amazing work mainly by eye. We have helped him with internet access for carpentry ideas and he is buying new tools through micro-loans from SVI. The new tools and exposure to new ideas/challenges has significantly increased the quality and creativity of his final product. Nolan will have more marketable skills to continue developing his carpentry business and secure his financial independence. |
As we continue with our project and focusing on selected motivated individuals, we will be soon developing an adult vocational training compound on our land in the remote village of San Pedro, Nicaragua. We will be constructing buildings to provide a permanent space for rotating tradesmen to provide courses. Needed trades and courses will include welding, carpentry, masonry, electrician, mechanics, farriers, saddlemakers, bee keepers, nutrionists, chefs/cooks, and more! If you are interested in mentoring in such a program and speak spanish, please let us know....we are always looking for volunteers.
